I’m here to talk to you today about why I went into functional medicine.

For me, it started when I was in my 20’s. I was having chronic pain. I was active, I worked out, but at 21 years old my joints hurt. I went to my doctor and started having tests done. I was surprised to hear that I had positive markers for rheumatoid arthritis. I had many indicators of inflammation in the system. So, at 21 years old my doctor wanted to put me on pain medication.

That really surprised me.

At 21 years old, I was supposed to rely on pain medication to function?

I didn’t want that so I decided to try things out on my own. I decided to cut out foods that I believed were inflammatory. So, the healthier I became with my diet, the more weight I lost and I had less pain.

The food I was eating was making a huge difference in the way I felt.

I was able to stay off pain medication for years.

Each year that I went back for a physical with the same doctor would seem surprised. He’d say, “All you did was change your diet?”

We’d run blood work during that physical and my results would come back with no signs of rheumatoid arthritis, and my inflammation indicators diminished significantly.

I had all these great results by simply eating better, and that was the beginning of my functional medicine journey.

It’s not talked about very often in the medical field, that you can make a difference in the way you feel by changing what you eat. Food is medicine.
